Protecting the foundation of your smile — healthy gums for life

Gum Disease: The Silent Epidemic

Periodontal (gum) disease affects more adults than most people realize — and it often progresses with few noticeable symptoms until it has caused significant damage.

75%

of adults over age 35 are affected by some form of gum disease

70%

of adult tooth loss is caused by periodontal disease

How Gum Disease Develops

Gum disease begins when plaque — a sticky film of bacteria — builds up along and below the gum line. When plaque is not removed regularly through brushing and flossing, it hardens into tartar (calculus), which can only be removed by a dental professional.

As bacteria accumulate, the gums become inflamed (gingivitis). If left untreated, the infection spreads deeper into the supporting bone and tissue around the teeth (periodontitis), eventually leading to tooth loss.

Periodontal Treatment at BV Family & Cosmetic Dentistry

Dr. Virk provides comprehensive periodontal therapy to address gum disease at every stage. Treatment typically begins with a thorough deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) to remove plaque and tartar from below the gum line, followed by more frequent maintenance visits to keep the disease under control.

For more advanced cases, we also offer site-specific periodontal therapy using our Biolase laser, which allows for precise, minimally invasive treatment of diseased gum tissue with less discomfort and faster healing.

Gum Disease and Your Overall Health

Research has linked periodontal disease to several systemic health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Maintaining healthy gums is an important part of your overall wellness.
