What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge literally bridges the gap left by one or more missing teeth. It consists of two or more crowns on the teeth on either side of the gap (abutment teeth) with one or more false teeth (pontics) in between. The bridge is cemented permanently in place — it is not removable like a partial denture.

Why Replace a Missing Tooth?

Leaving a gap from a missing tooth can cause more problems than just aesthetics. Over time, neighboring teeth will drift into the space, the opposing tooth may super-erupt, and your bite can change. This leads to difficulty chewing, jaw problems, and additional tooth loss.

What to Expect

A bridge is typically completed in two visits. At the first visit, the abutment teeth are prepared and impressions are taken. A temporary bridge is placed while your permanent bridge is custom-crafted. At the second visit, the permanent bridge is fitted and cemented in place.

With proper care (regular brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings), a bridge can last 10–15 years or longer.
