Modern root canals are comfortable — they relieve pain, not cause it
Root canal therapy is a procedure that saves a severely infected or damaged tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted. Despite its reputation, modern root canal treatment is a comfortable procedure — comparable to getting a filling — and the relief it provides from tooth pain is immediate.
Many people fear root canals because of outdated reputation. With modern anesthesia and techniques — including our Biolase laser for root canal therapy — the procedure is far more comfortable than most patients expect. In fact, the tooth pain from an infected pulp is typically much worse than the treatment itself.
Root canal therapy is needed when the pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels) becomes infected or inflamed. This can happen due to:
Signs you may need a root canal include severe toothache, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, darkening of the tooth, or swelling and tenderness in nearby gums.
During the procedure, Dr. Virk removes the infected pulp, cleans and shapes the root canals, and fills them with a biocompatible material. The tooth is then sealed with a crown to restore full function and protect it from future damage. Most root canals are completed in one to two visits.
We can also perform root canal therapy using our Biolase laser, which can make the procedure even more comfortable by reducing the amount of anesthetic needed.
